Delia Gilgen:
Building a Safe Space for Self Development

I dream of a world where everybody feels safe enough to be authentic to her- or himself and where everybody’s full potential can flourish.

While attending the course “Integrated Self Development: Becoming an Agent of Transformation” by Alexander Schieffer and Rama Mani in 2018 I started to understand the importance of a safe place. The feeling of security enables self-development as well as holistic and transformative education. I see education as a powerful tool for innovation, but I believe that such teaching needs to encourage each dimension of the human being. Thus, I think that each kind of intelligence should be valued equally, i.e. logic smart, nature smart as well as artistic smart – just to mention a few types of intelligence – should all be of the same worth.

Teaching English and German in the Favelas in Brazil

My interest in education and the human being has already started in high school, having completed my Matura in Switzerland with a major in Education, Psychology, and Philosophy. Further, during my studies at the University in St.Gallen, I had the opportunity to go volunteering in the Favelas in Brazil, teaching English and German.
I dream of a world where everybody feels safe enough to be authentic to her- or himself and where everybody’s full potential can flourish. I therefore wish to be part of a safe place where everyone feels comfortable enough to share their thoughts and feeling

An inspiring quote for me has always been: “if more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarding gold, it would be a merrier world” (Tolkien, 2006) I trust that by sitting together, talking, and sharing we are able to transform this world to a better place, as thereby also shared knowledge gets created. For me, in order for a place to feel safe, there must also be love within that place. I believe that if we manage to love ourselves, others, and the Earth we can achieve big changes for our future.

As a TRANS4M Junior Fellow, I want to co-create something great, work on real solutions, and feel like part of a safe community. I think that I can contribute to this, through the joyfulness and love that I want to give to the world!
